Cross-Country & Snowshoeing Trails in Winter Park

Don't let the snow and cold keep you from the trails! Winter Park and Fraser have miles of snow-shoeing and cross-country ski trails. 

MAPS & TRAIL TIPS: For updates on trail status, use COTREX (a mobile and desktop application for a statewide comprehensive and interactive trail map) to always have your maps with you. Stop by the Information Center in downtown Winter Park for hard-copy maps and additional information or details on road closures and trail work. Additional Trails

Rocky Mountain National Park

Several trails in the Kawuneeche Valley are available for snowshoeing and skiing. There are also Ranger-led tours available January - March. Reservations are required, but are free of charge. 

Winter Park Resort/ Granby Ranch

Know Before You Go

Be sure to review and follow Leave No Trace principles as well as learn where to recycle and deposit trash. Dogs are welcome on all National Forest and town trails, please keep under control at all times and pick up after your pet including remove poop bags. With the pine beetle affecting many of our forested areas and the US Forest Service managing tree removal and healthy reforestation, follow them for their latest projects and updates:

Confluence Park (Easy)

Length: .2 miles
Elevation: Flat
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: Access behind the skate park in Hideaway Park
Trail Description: Along Vazquez Creek, makes a loop and returns

Elk Meadow Trail (Easy)

Length: 2.5-mile loop
Elevation: Slight gain
Groomed: No
Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow Highway 40 north to the Fraser Valley Center (the Murdoch’s shopping center) traffic light and turn left at Wendy’s onto CR 72. Continue straight up the hill past the Fraser Tubing Hill until you come to the Forest Service gate. Park at the gate and start up the hill. Less than a quarter mile up, you will see Elk Meadow Trail on the left. The trail will continue through the meadow and woods over the bridges. At the “T” intersection go right on D2 up to FS 158. Take 158 back to the parking area.
Trail Description: Roams through the spruce and fir forest with panoramic views of the Continental Divide, Winter Park Resort and Byers Peak.

Fraser River Trail – South (Easy)

Length: 2.5 miles from the trailhead to Old Town Winter Park.
Elevation: Mostly flat
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, access the trail by walking east on Rendezvous Way at the corner behind the condos. Bear right (south)
Trail Description: Goes through the Roam project and behind the old Beavers Lodge and follows the Fraser River through the forest and passes under Highway 40 continuing along the river until it reaches Winter Park Place Rd. Take a left then a right 1/3 mile to visit the Winter Park Resort or return back the way you came. This trail is very scenic along the river with a slight uphill towards the ski resort. The Winter River Trail on the east side of the Fraser River connects Beavers/Roam to Meadows Trail.

Fraser River – North (Easy)

Length: 3.7 miles to Co Rd 8 in Fraser.
Elevation: Mostly flat
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, access the trail by walking east on Rendezvous Way at the corner behind the condos. Bear left to the Meadows Trail and left on Crosstrails.
Trail Description: A wide trail that follows the Fraser River north to Fraser with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Do an out and back or jump on the shuttle bus at Safeway to return.

Givelo/Northwest Passage Trails (Easy)

Length: 3.2 miles one way for both
Elevation: Mostly flat
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Locations: From Fraser, the intersection of Co Rd 721 and 73 or Co Rd # 50. Northwest Passage at Lower Creekside Trailhead of Co Rd 73
Trail Description: Givelo parallels Co Rd 73 and intersects with both the Northwest Passage and Creekside trails. Northwest passage continues across open meadows surrounded by mountain views.

High Lonesome Hut (Easy)

Length: 2.3 miles-one way
Elevation: Moderate gain
Groomed: No
Trailhead Location: Head north on Hwy 40 towards Tabernash and turn right on CR 83. In .4 miles go left on CR 84 which turns into FS 129. Continue 3.9 miles to a pullout on the left. The Strawberry Trail trailhead begins on the other side of the gate.
Trailhead Description: Out and back. Crosses meadows and the creek and heads into the woods. At the Woody Hill fork continue straight to the next fork. Turn right at the next fork a short distance to the High Lonesome Hut.

Lunch Loop (Easy)

Length: 3.2 miles
Elevation: Flat
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: Access at the Lions Club Ponds next to Safeway in Fraser or the Fraser River Trailhead at Mountain Man Park in Rendezvous
Trail Description: A loop along the Fraser River and around the ponds between Winter Park and Fraser.

Sports Complex Loops (Easy)

Length: 4 miles each
Elevation: Flat
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: Hwy 40 to CR 5 to the left. Turn right at the Sports Complex. Park and follow the road north to the trail.
Trail Description: Flat loops around the sports field with great views of the surrounding mountains.

Discovery Trail Loop / Jim Creek Trail (Easy to Moderate)

Length: 1.5 mile loop / 3.5 miles one way  
Elevation: Loop is flat / Jim Creek 1200’ gain
Groomed: No
Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow Highway 40 south toward the Winter Park Resort. Turn left at the 3rd stop light and park at the Bonfils Stanton Outdoor Center directly flat loop around and over the beaver ponds and creek. To access the Jim Creek trail, follow the Discovery trail to the right and follow the trail to FS road 128. Cross the road and the Jim Creek trailhead is on the left.
Trail Description: The Discovery Trail is a short, relatively flat loop crossing beaver ponds and Jim Creek. The Jim Creek Trail follows Jim Creek in an old-growth Spruce and Fir forest through open meadows to a small falls at the end. Steep in sections. This is an out and back.

Fraser To Granby Trail (Easy to Moderate)

Length: 17.2 miles with access points along the route - Fraser Sports Complex, Tabernash, CR 515, CR 5, CR 53
Elevation: Gently rolling with moderate climbs and descents
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: Hwy 40 to CR 5 to the left. Turn right at the Sports Complex. Park and follow the road north to the trail.
Trail Description: Meanders through the meadows along the highway and crosses under the highway to the Granby Ranch area. Panoramic views along the way.

Blue Sky / Little Vasquez (Moderate)

Length: 4-mile loop
Elevation: Moderate plus gain
Groomed: No
Trailhead Location: At Vasquez Rd., turn right and follow Vasquez Rd. up and over the railroad tracks. At Arapaho Rd. turn left and follow Arapaho Rd. up through the residential neighborhood until you reach a gate and park.  
Trail Description: Startup the road (Little Vasquez) until you see the sign for Blue Sky on the right. Follow the Blue Sky trail until you reach Tunnel Hill Rd. and turn left. The top of the climb is on Tunnel Hill Rd. you will pass Chickadee trail on your left. If you want a challenging descent take Chickadee and it will meet back up with Little Vasquez Rd. at the bottom. If you want a more relaxed descent, follow Tunnel Hill Rd. to the Little Vasquez intersection. Follow Little Vasquez back to the parking area.

Leyland Creek and Lollipop Loop (Moderate)

Length: 3.1-mile loop
Elevation: Moderate gain
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: Take the Alpine Trail from Wolf Park in Winter Park north to Leyland Creek Trail
Trail Description: Spectacular panoramic views of Winter Park Resort, the Continental Divide, Vazquez and Byers Peak.

Monarch Lake Loop (Moderate)

Length: 4.1- mile loop
Elevation: Mostly flat 
Groomed: No
Trailhead Location: Take Highway 40 through Granby and turn right on Hwy 34 towards Grand Lake 11.5 miles. Turn right onto CR 6 and follow 10 miles to the Monarch Lake parking area and trailhead.
Trailhead Description: Inside the Arapaho National Recreation Area requiring a day pass. This flat trail begins at the old cabin and loops around the lake with stunning views of the Indian Peaks.

USFS Roads #160, #159, #158, #148 & #152 (Vazquez, Elk Creek, St Louis Creek areas) and FS #139 (Churches Park area off Co Rd 50). (Easy to Moderate)

Trailhead Locations: See Trail Map. Off Co. RD 72, 73, 50 and Vazquez Rd. (FS 148)
Trail Description: Miles of Forest Service roads that are closed to motor vehicles in the winter providing a quiet, backcountry experience. Ungroomed but light snowmobile traffic does provide tracked trails in some areas.

Rendezvous / Idlewild Trails (Easy to Difficult)

Length: Plan your own loop and distance.
Elevation: varies
Groomed: Yes-only the Rendezvous Loop (2.1 miles)
Trail Location: Take the trail along Rendezvous Way to the Meadow Trailhead 
Trail Description: Rendezvous / Idlewild trails is a trail system on the east side of Winter Park with options for short or long loops. With varying elevation gains. The trails roam through the forest and meadows with panoramic views of the Continental Divide, Winter Park Resort, downtown Winter Park and Byers Peak. A moderate 3-mile loop in this area is Meadow/Serendipity/Yankee Doodle with a 485’ elevation gain.

Second Creek / Broome Hut (Moderate to difficult)

Length: 1 mile one-way
Elevation: 737’ elevation gain 10,585’-11,322’
Groomed: No 
Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow Highway 40 southbound onto Berthoud Pass. A pull-off at mile marker 240 along with a large orange Avalanche Warning sign marks the trailhead.
Trail Description: Starting on the Second Creek trail you will follow the creek for a steep climb, you will get high enough where the trees start to become fewer where you will have great views of the cirque and the Broome Hut. Once at the Broome Hut views include James Peak, Parry Peak and the Continental Divide. It is possible to continue to the top of the ridge for spectacular panoramic views. 

St Louis Creek Loop (Moderate to more difficult)

Length: 7.9-mile loop or shorten to Creekside Trail only
Elevation: Moderate gains with steep sections.
Groomed: Yes
Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow Highway 40 north to the Fraser Valley Center (the Murdoch’s shopping center) traffic light and turn left at Wendy’s onto CR 72. Veer right onto CR 721 (Fraser Parkway) and follow to the “T” intersection. Turn left onto CR 73 and continue until you see the St. Louis Creek Campground sign and turn left into the campground parking area.
Trail Description: Winds through the woods, meadows and along the creek. Rolling to flat terrain. Panoramic views of the Continental Divide and Byers Peak.

Deadhorse Loop Trail (Difficult)

Length: 7-mile loop
Elevation: 1,310 gain
Groomed: No
Trailhead Location: Follow the directions to the Creekside/Flume Trail and continue past CR 159 on your left to the gate closure. Park in the parking area on the right. The trailhead is at the far end of the lot. Continue right to the fork and bear right on the Deadhorse Trail. At the intersection with the Tipperary Creek Trail stay right and back down to the parking area.
Trail Description: Meanders through spruce and fir forests with sweeping views of the Continental Divide, Byers Peak and Ski Resort.
